There are numerous reasons why people get tattoos. Everyone has their own individual reason, but these fall into a number of different categories and the specific reason for getting a tattoo will often be the same for many people. One specific person might get a tattoo to show their love for their country, for example. There are a lot of people who do this, but the countries differ, the reasons for that love differ, and the way it is expressed will also differ.

The love of one’s country is one of the major reasons to get a tattoo. This can be demonstrated by the drawing of a flag, a map or a national symbol, or some combination of all.

Someone with Irish blood might get a map of Ireland in the colors of the flag, with a shamrock in the middle, while someone American may get the Stars and Stripes draped around a Bald Eagle. The symbols and how they are depicted will be different but the underlying sentiment the same.

Other reasons to get tattooed include showing your love for a spouse or a partner, or commemorating the births of your children. Lots of people get tattoos to show a sporting allegiance, or to show respect for a personal hero, or just to reflect a personal interest. Someone who loves driving, for example, may get an insignia of their favourite vehicle manufacturer. Everyone has their own reason for getting a tattoo – but if it isn’t self-explanatory from looking at the tattoo, be prepared to spend some time explaining it.
